ICSE or CBSE? Which would be the best?

ICSE and CBSE are both recognized boards in schools and colleges across India. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) are among the most popular nationalized boards in the country and are a top choice of many parents for a bright future of their children. Both of these boards are considered to be of high-merit with an added advantage of being internationally recognized, which makes it easier for the students to move abroad for higher education or even permanent settlement. However, both of these boards vary in terms of teaching methodologies, delivery of knowledge, focus on extra-curricular activities, practical knowledge, levels of learning, structure of lessons, subject matter, and so on.

Which among the two is Future-Proof?

The CBSE is recognized by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) with the purpose of operating a chain of central schools with standardized learning and pattern of exams being held. CBSE has PAN India presence through its more than 24,000 affiliated schools spread all over the country and it also has approximately 240 schools in 26 countries across the globe.

The curriculum for the same is set as per NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training), an autonomous body of the Government of India which selects and sets the curriculum for each year and grade. Textbooks and reading materials are also standardized in all the CBSE schools across the country.

The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) is an examination conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE). It is a private, non-governmental board of school education in India for class 10th. More than 2,300 schools in India and abroad are affiliated to the CISCE. After Class 10, the Class 12 examination for ICSE students is conducted under ISC (Indian School Certificate).

ICSE is designed to fulfil the recommendation of New Education policy, 1986. After that the demand for ICSE affiliated schools kept on increasing. The mode of examination, communication and instruction is English which makes them prepared for the world with a strong command over the language.

The teachings and the methods of teaching both are more detail oriented. They also focus more on practical knowledge and so in exams, 20 percent of the marks are allotted only for internal assessment. This includes any projects, lab work, fieldwork, research, etc.

Subject Division and Marking Scheme in ICSE

ICSE is one of those few boards which gives students a choice in the subjects and studies they want to learn or continue learning further. This helps them have a clear mind set and a basic understanding of the subject matter and its content either in Class 12 or Degree College. The subjects of Class 10 examination are divided in 3 groups: -

Group 1 - All the subjects are compulsory with an 80-20 ratio. 80 percent theoretical and 20 percent practical/internal assessment. The compulsory subjects consist of: - English, Second Language, History, Civics and Geography.

Group 2 - Students are free to choose any 2 subjects out of many offered with the same 80-20 ratio. These subjects will be core of what they decide to pursue further in ISC and in terms of degree they want to achieve.

Group 3 - Students are free to select any one subject in Group 3, however, this group follows a 50-50 ratio. This means that the subject students choose in this group will offer the most practical knowledge out of any.

With equal weightage to all subjects and preparing students for exams like TOEFL, IELTS, etc. ICSE is truly future-proof. This makes students prepared for whatever they want to do, be it studying outside India or continuing with ISC (Indian School Certificate).

If you are planning higher education for your child at a foreign university then ICSE is an ideal board for them. Even if you are a family who often shifts to a new city, state or country as per your work requirements, then again you cannot go wrong with ICSE as its international presence and a sophisticated curriculum can aid in the transition without disrupting the learning process.

Whatever you are planning, ICSE is guaranteed to have your children’s back and support them in achieving their dreams. The aim of ICSE is not just getting restricted to something only being in India, rather opening yourself to the entire world.
